How does Depo-Provera work?

This solution is able to prevent pregnancy in patients by stopping the release of the egg by the patient’s ovaries. It will thicken the cervical mucus, thereby making it harder for the sperm to reach and fertilize the egg. At the same time, it will also thin the uterine lining, making it difficult for the egg that does become fertilize to implant or attach to the uterus.

Treatment Details

Depo-Provera is injected into a muscle or under the skin, usually in the upper arm or the buttocks. The healthcare provider will be administering the shot, and it will happen every 3 months for continued effects. For adult contraception, 150mg once every 13 weeks in either the deltoid or gluteal muscle is applied. For subcutaneous injections 104mg every 12 to 14 weeks into the abdomen or anterior thigh is performed. Pediatric application, and injections for endometriosis have different dosages, and they can be found on the product leaflet.

How long does it last?

This will help patients avoid pregnancy for about 3 months.

Safety Information

Although generally safe for use, there are some things to take note of when choosing this product. Patients should not use Depo-Provera if they have vaginal bleeding, liver disease, breast cancer, or if they are currently pregnant. If they have ever had a stroke or blood clot, it is also best to avoid this product. Patients should tell doctors if they have irregular or light menstrual periods, risk factors for osteoporosis, kidney disease, breast lump/s, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, asthma, migraines, or seizures.

Other Side Effects 

Some of the benign and common side effects include:

  • Changes in menstrual periods
  • Stomach pain
  • Weakness
  • Weight gain
  • Feeling nervous
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Headache or dizziness

  • Heavier or longer menstrual periods
  • Severe pain in lower stomach
  • Swelling in hands, feet, ankles, face
  • Symptoms of depression
  • Pain, bleeding, or skin changes
  • Liver problems
  • Signs of a blood clot

Recovery Time 

Patients are recommended to avoid sexual activity for at least 24 hours. It should also be noted this solution cannot protect against sexually transmitted diseases including HIV and AIDS.
