For males, Gardasil helps protect against the following diseases:

  • Genital warts caused by HPV types 6 and 11

As well as the precancerous or dysplastic lesions caused by all four of the aforementioned HPV types, anal intraepithelial neoplasia grades 1, 2, and 3.

How does Gardasil work?

All papillomaviruses, including HPV, have this kind of shell also known as a capsid. This is made up of L1 proteins, and Gardasil contains the purified versions of these proteins that are found in types 6, 11, 16, and 18 of HPV. They are produced through a method called recombinant DNA technology, and they are created by yeast cells into which DNA has been introduced so that they are then able to make the aforementioned L1 proteins. These proteins are then assembled in particles that resemble the virus, yet not capable of infection like the actual HPV. When given the vaccine, the patient’s immune system creates the antibodies combating the L1 proteins, and after vaccination, the immune system can create antibodies more readily when it is actually exposed to the real virus. The vaccine also contains an adjuvant, a compound that stimulates a better response which contains aluminum.

Treatment Details

Patients aged 9 to 13 can take two doses of Gardasil spaced six months apart. If the second dose happens earlier than six months after the first, a third dose should be given. Any patient older should receive a three-dose schedule with the second dose happening two months after the first, and the last dose injected four months after the second.

This does not always happen on schedule but there should always be at least one month between the first and second dose, and at least three months between the second and the last dose within any given year. The vaccine is injected into a muscle, either the shoulder or the thigh.

How long does Gardasil last?

Solutions like Gardasil or other anti-TNF drugs are used over a period of 6-12 weeks, wherein the inflammation and other symptoms are observed to improve.

Safety Information

Observation for 15 minutes after administration is recommended as syncope can possibly develop. Medical professionals administering the vaccine should always be prepared for a possible allergic reaction like anaphylactic shock.

Other Side Effects

Common adverse reactions include fever, nausea, dizziness, and headache, as well as local injection site pain and swelling.

Recovery Time

Gardasil has shown to protect against the four types of HPV for at least 10 years.

Cost of Gardasil

The average cost of this vaccine per syringe is around $240.

Bottom line

Gardasil has been voluntarily recalled in the US alone for reasons other than safety. Gardasil is still used around the world though, and has been helping patients be safeguarded from the effects of HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18.
