These are some of the ailments that this treatment is indicated for:
- Plaque psoriasis
- Psoriatic arthritis
- Axial spondyloarthritis (both radiographic and non-radiographic)
How does Taltz work?
The active ingredient in Taltz known as ixekizumab belongs to a group of molecules called a monoclonal antibody. These are laboratory-designed, and they are a protein that are specifically developed to attach to interleukin 17A, which is a messenger molecule. This molecule is found in the body’s immune system, and it is heavily involved in immune system effects, which include inflammation, which then in turn causes psoriasis. Because Taltz latches onto the interleukin 17A, it then goes on to block the action of the molecule, thereby limiting immune system activity which can then lessen the psoriasis symptoms.
Treatment Details
Taltz is usually introduced via injection under the skin. Patients can sometimes be taught how to do this by themselves by professional healthcare providers so that they can do it at home. This medication is not used daily however, and it is important to follow the doctor’s recommended dosages. The first dose may be 2 injections at once, but later doses are usually once every 2 to 4 weeks. The timing of the injections as well as dosage may also be affected by factors such as weight and the kind of disease being treated. Before use, the medicine must be allowed to come down to room temp for 30 minutes after being taken out of the refrigerator.
How long does Taltz last?
Usually, symptoms start to improve around 1 to 2 weeks after treatment, and will only improve with continued use and time. For psoriasis, most regimens last for around 12 weeks.
