How does Tobradex work?
Tobradex is a sterile ophthalmic solution which contains a one-two combo of dexamethasone and tobramycin. Dexamethasone is a steroid, and is used in the formulation to treat the swelling that is sometimes experienced due to bacterial eye infection. Tobramycin is an antibiotic which treats bacterial infections, or inflammation in the eyes. Tobradex is indication for treatment of external eye infections and its adnexa caused by the susceptible bacteria.
Treatment Details
Patients need to ensure that their hands are clean or sanitized before applying this medication properly. The tip of the tube should not touch the eye, or any other surface of the body. The patient should make sure the solution is well-mixed, and then tilt their head back, look up, and then pull down the lower eyelid of the affected eye/s. One drop of the solution should be placed on each affected eye, and then the patient must close their eyes for 2 to 3 minutes. The eye should not be rubbed. The patient should not use medication with contact lenses on, and the lenses should be put back in after 15 minutes have passed after application.
How long does Tobradex last?
The medication should be repeated as often and for as long as the doctor recommends. It is also recommended to use one drop on the affected eye/s every 4 to 6 hours, except for when the patient is sleeping. Usually dosing lasts 14 days, but must not exceed 24 days.
Safety Information
Any patients who have demonstrated hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in Tobradex, or any of its components. If a missed dose were to happen, the patient should not double-dose to make up for it. Patients should not use this for any viral or fungal infections of the eye. Pregnant or nursing women should ask for the doctor’s recommendation before using this medication. Older patients and children have been proven to be safe when using this drug.
Other Side Effects
Less serious possible side effects of Tobradex are:
- Mild burning
- Mild redness
- Blurred vision
- Eyelid twitching
- Light sensitivity
Serious side effects (usually due to long-term use) of this medicine include:
- Glaucoma
- Nerve damage in the eye
- Cataract formation

Recovery Time
Patients should not use any contact lenses that have not been approved by the doctor. No other eye medication should be used unless cleared by the doctor either. Patient should also avoid driving or any activity that requires being able to see clearly when making use of this medication.
